The picture above is a glimpse into how I spent (at least) 28 hours of summer this year. I squeezed extra study time into family pool trips and during nap times and playtime and officially completed a national certification in Medication Therapy Management (MTM).
YAY!
Ok, but what is MTM?
Well, have you ever been to a therapist or counselor or trusted pastor/friend and had the opportunity to just spill your guts about that thing that has been bothering you, worrying you, or keeping you up at night? Well, MTM is kind of like that. Medication Therapy Management (MTM) is a service where you are provided with a dedicated time to talk to a pharmacist who has taken a comprehensive look at YOUR medication profile. So instead of digging into your emotions, you’ll be digging into your medications (and let’s be honest: those two things can be intertwined pretty tightly sometimes!).

If you have questions about your medication - this is the time to ask! If you have been experiencing unwanted side effects - this is the time to talk about it! If your medication costs too much & you’ve been skipping doses or not taking it at all - this is the time to DO something about it!
And after your session? Well that’s even better than talk therapy! Because the pharmacist is there to help communicate any issues to your physician and work toward getting them resolved. That’s right…imagine going to therapy and then having the therapist write a letter or make a phone call to your mom/partner/boss and hashing out the details with them on what needs to change. I’m pretty sure they charge extra for that!
One of the great things about this service is that because of all the data collected on how much this opportunity:
1. Prevents medication errors
2. Improves patient outcomes and
3. Saves money in the long run
…it is often covered by MEDICARE (part D for Drug coverage) for FREE! (See here )
As with almost anything, the eligibility requirements differ with each insurance carrier. If you have more than one chronic medication condition or very high medication costs, you are usually included in this. Call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card to find out if you qualify.
Each insurance company has their own pharmacists contracted to perform this service for them, so it won’t be me, but I still highly recommend taking advantage of this service if it’s offered!
If you are not one of our lucky seniors covered by Medicare, but are still interested in this service, give me a call! We can chat and see and see if this “therapy” is right for you. Let’s dig in!
