Pharmacogenomic Testing (PGx)
What is it?
-
This is a DNA test that can be helpful in identifying if the way your body metabolizes certain drugs is "different" from the average person of your age, sex, weight, etc.
Why would that matter?
-
The way we metabolize drugs can change the way we react to drugs, both good and bad!
-
You can have a genetic difference or "variant" that will make you a poor, intermediate or ultra-rapid metabolizer of multiple drugs
- This can cause you to experience severe side effects to medications that others do not OR prevent you from benefiting from particular medications or doses that are very beneficial for others
-
For example:
-
An ultrarapid metabolizer of the pain medication codeine may have a life-threatening overdose reaction to what would otherwise be considered a safe dose in someone without a gene variant 1
-
A poor metabolizer of Plavix (clopidogrel) is 30% more likely to have a major heart attack or stroke while taking Plavix - versus on an alternative medication that is metabolized differently 2
-
-
-
99% of people have at least one genetic variant that could affect the way medications work for them
-
87% have 3 or more variants

How is the test performed?
DNA is collected with a simple cheek swab. It is not painful and quick to perform. We are happy to travel to a Baton Rouge location convenient for you in order to make sample collection a breeze!
When will I get my results?
Once the sample has been sent to the lab, expect results in 2 to 3 weeks. You will be given the option to receive notifications when your test has arrived at the lab for processing and when results are ready to view
How many medications are covered by this test?
We currently have evidence for about 130 FDA approved medications - this changes as new research is published so feel free to email us for a more detailed list. For now, medications include many anti-depressants, ADHD medications, blood thinners, statins, pain medications, and more!
What about other gene variants?
Great question! This test will also give you information about your MTHFR and COMT function, as well as your ApoE diplotype. How these results may affect you (as well as methods to supplement for poor function) will be discussed at our post-results meeting.
What if I just want the test but don't want a full consultation with you?
That is totally okay! Simply send me an email saying so and I will help you access a test which can be reviewed with your trusted healthcare provider.
